My curatorial work includes events, commissioning and exhibitions in both digital and in-person formats. I also work text and video and have been nominated for the Michael O’Pray Prize 2022 for writing&nbsp; I have curated work for Open City Documentary Festival, LUX and Cinema Rediscoverd and worked with film festivals and institutions including the BFI London Film Festival, Sheffield DocFest and BFI Flare. Some of my work engages with ideas of labour, institutionality and care, presenting work which helps unpick, unravel and undo the current structures we are inhabiting and which aim to construct better alternatives in their place.&nbsp; My work also centres joy and pleasure, in particular queer notions of pleasure. I m interested in what experiencing a moment that is fun, sexy or thrilling can do for us and the political potential they all hold . I can’t imagine a utopia using just theory and righteous anger and I wouldn’t want the audiences I’m working for to have to either. So let’s have fun, seriously.&nbsp; As with many creatives, I am a freelancer, part-timer. I work independently and as part of larger projects within institutions and in a range of roles and disciplines. Stuck being too avant-garde for the porn industry and too sleazy for the arthouse cinema circuit, Bruce hasn’t been able to make himself the next Warhol until he runs across Googie, an up-and-coming&nbsp; porn director who promises to help him through exploiting him. This was the first exhibition of Cruising Archaeology, an ongoing artistic project by Jack Scollard that involves a meticulous process of selecting and curating discarded objects collected from queer cruising sites. First presented as an Instagram account and later as a book published by SMUT Press, Cruising Archaeology has documented hundreds of unique objects. Using methods taken from the field of archaeology, these items, often discarded or overlooked, are repositioned as relics of a subcultural sexual practice. By applying the rigour of archaeology to the ephemeral nature of the cruising ground, Scollard explores the tension between preservation and disappearance. Cruising Archaeology: The Pleasure Archive Research Centrefunctions as a material analysis of queer lives and the spaces they inhabit. Friends, lovers&nbsp;and family members become inspirations and collaborators, be it the poetry of Cavafy or a first cut of a song. Both projects make the case for the process of making art being porous, always evolving in response to the people and places in which it is taking place.&nbsp; Alice Bucknell’s projects, Earth Engine and Ground Truthing, and Kris Hofmann’s Out of Nowhere explore how our rapidly-changing&nbsp;climate is shaping the ways in which we make sense of our environments. The works call attention to what we notice and how we notice it when interacting with the landscapes around us. The artists carried out extensive research on moving image work created by amateur film clubs in Poland during the socialist period and&nbsp;in 2019&nbsp;brought the works together into an accessible collection, placing them within the public domain.&nbsp; This selection&nbsp;of films from Enthusiasts: Archive stretch across the socialist period and cover subjects including the country’s rapid post-war urbanisation, working life in these new cities and the emergence of dissent. A range of formal techniques are employed, including animation, live-action and chemical development. Set against the backdrop of Guyana’s mining history, Knock Down Pork Knocker examines the intersection of Caribbean folklore with the lasting spiritual, material and labour legacies of resource extraction following British colonial rule. After the abolition of slavery, Pork Knockers emerged as independent miners seeking fortune along the Guyanese interiors as they navigated the lingering extractive colonial economy. This 16mm film follows the miner Kiso as he encounters a river spirit, or Jumbie, while searching for gold. The character of the spirit, drawn from the Massacooramaan of Amerindian lore present in wider Guyanese imaginaries, articulates the fraught transition out of the plantation system and into the precarious labour economies of the post-emancipation era. As the narrator’s cadence flows into the presence of Kiso and Massa, these various approaches act as vessels for critical storytelling. The film unfolds not as a closed narrative but as an open-ended allegory commenting on the overlapping histories of the Caribbean. Kalil Hadad’s Victim of Circumstance sees Scott and Brandon meet in the 1980s at an orphanage. Lured by a magazine, they make their way, some months apart, to the California they see depicted in its pages.Told through a hi-intensity assemblage of found material from gay porn videos and magazines of the period, some things altogether more unsettling come to emerge from amongst the images of the Sunshine State’s sun-kissed twinks. William E Jones’ essay film Finished is a detective story and a love story, a film noir bathed in the sunlight of tapes. An unseen narrator looks into what happened to Alan Lambert, a porn performer who he’s taken rather a liking to. A proto-parasocial relationship forms as they discover Lambert’s suicide shortly after being told he was finished in the industry, aged 25. Through clips of Lambert’s appearances and footage related to his life, a portrait of two obsessions emerges: Lambert’s almost messianic visions of grandeur and Jones’ searching desire to re-animate his subject.
